Do you have a pedometer? Here is why you need one in your life
Wed 16 10 2019

Almost everyone has had the need of becoming fit, but rarely that anyone does the effort to start this journey. Many reasons may be behind the unsuccessful attempts, but the main one is the lack of motivation.

There are many possibilities to motivate yourself to workout including; working out with a friend, working out early in the morning, preparing your outfit and gear beforehand and using a pedometer.

If you’ve tried almost everything but are wondering what a pedometer is, then keep reading.

A pedometer is a gadget that counts your steps. For a pedometer, a step is equal to a body tilt to one side followed by the swing of a leg forward. Given that an individual’s steps are equal to each other by length, the pedometer counts the steps achieved and multiplies the result by the length of the step to get the overall distance walked.

Why can a pedometer motivate you to walk more?

Imagine that you have a pedometer and it indicates that you have walked 2500 steps, achieving 50% of your daily goal. Wouldn’t feel like you want to put an additional effort and achieve 100% of that goal? 5000 to 6000 steps might not be much, but wanting to increase this number can lead you to achieve your fitness goals.

What is the number of steps that you need to achieve daily?

While many recommend 6000 steps per day, however, 10000 steps is the answer. When you first purchase a pedometer, you will see that the goal is automatically set to 10000 steps per day but why? If you convert 10000 steps into kilometers, you will get approximately 5 miles or 8 kilometers, which is the daily distance recommended by the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC). Furthermore, 10000 steps per day may help you reduce many health risks like high blood pressure and heart diseases.

Where do you stand?

If you would like to know how far you are, or the opposite, follow this classification:

You’re inactive, if you walk less than 5000 steps per day

You’re average if you make from 7500 to 9999 steps per day

You’re very active if you walk more than 12500 steps per day

So why do you need a pedometer now?

For 3 reasons:

1. It will motivate you to move more

Keeping track of your daily fitness activity will push you to increase your level. Looking at your data history will increase your awareness of your daily physical efforts, and the efforts you’d need in the future.

2. You can link it to your smartphone

Pedometer apps will help you to track not only your steps but also the calories you burn. You do not need to turn on the pedometer every time you are going to do a physical activity, because it will be counting your steps as soon as you have your phone on you.

3. It will help you challenge yourself and increase your goals

If you have a specific goal to achieve, like increasing your heart rate, you can use a pedometer to achieve the right number of steps that will lead you to your goal. It is a great way to test and challenge yourself.
