7 facts you did not know about body fat
Sun 29 11 2020

A lot of people think that body fat is the enemy, and they work very hard on reducing theirs to 0%. While this is not always right, there is also a lot of misunderstood information about body fat. For this reason, we decided to bring you 7 facts you should know about it.

1. Women have higher levels of body fat

It is scientifically proven that women carry more fat than men. This is true because women produce more essential fat. In fact, women’s body fat makes up to 12% of their bodies, while men’s body fat is about 3% of theirs. This difference is noticeable because women carry more fat in their hips, thighs, and breasts.

2. Here is where your fat goes when it is burnt

Have you ever wondered where does the fat go after a good workout session? When you consume fewer foods containing high amounts of fat, or when you work out intensively you burn out a lot of your body fat. While the term “burn” describes figuratively what happens to your body fat, the truth is that your body absorbs the fat internally. It is converted and then used as fuel for your workouts and activities. Also, with the right workout, fat can be transformed into muscles.

3. White vs. brown fat

You have white adipose tissues and brown adipose tissues. The first one stores and transforms your fat into energy, and is located near organs like the kidney, heart and lungs. The second type, the brown adipose tissues, keeps you warm. Their function is to generate heat and for this reason, they have more capillaries and mitochondria than white adipose tissue.

4. You are at risk of diabetes if you have too much or too little fat

While it is common that obese people, with high levels of body fats, are more prone to diabetes, this is not always true. In fact, too little fat can have the same effect on a person’s health.

5. High level of fat means you’re prone to having cancer

This is unfortunately true since the adipose tissues create some sort of hormones that makes cancerous cellules grow faster.

6. The healthy percentage of fat by age

For every age, exists a healthy percentage of fat. These percentages are different between sexes and ages. In fact, the older you are, the higher your healthy body fat percentage will be and this is due to the slowdown of metabolism with age. For women the healthy body fat percentage by age is the following:

Age: between 18-38 = 21%-23%

Between 40-59 = 23%-33%

7. Your body fat connects with your other body organs

Fat sends microRNAs (miRNAs) which control gene activity. It does so to regulate some activities of these organs, one study on mice, showed that the animals’ fat tissues communicated with their liver in order to control gene expression. While scientists say that they do not have enough evidence about this, many of their studies have proved this communication.
